One of our key roles as osteopaths is deciding whether further investigations, such as imaging, are necessary to support your diagnosis and treatment. In many cases, a thorough physical assessment is enough to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal issues without the need for imaging. However, there are times when scans help clarify what’s going on beneath the surface. When a scan is clinically appropriate, it’s important to know who can refer you, what’s covered by Medicare, when you might need to see a GP, and what kind of costs you might be looking at. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand your options when it comes to getting a scan.
What Osteopaths Can Refer For
As registered osteopaths in Australia, we have the ability to refer patients directly for several imaging procedures, including X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans. X-rays of the spine, hips, or pelvis referred by osteopaths can be bulk-billed through Medicare, meaning no out-of-pocket cost for eligible patients. Other imaging modalities like ultrasound and MRI are not typically covered by Medicare when referred by an osteopath. This means patients often incur out-of-pocket costs.
Typical Costs If Referred Directly by an Osteopath:
- Ultrasound: $150–$250
- MRI: $300–$500+
- CT scan: $250–$500
We always ensure that the cost is discussed with you before any referral, and we’ll only suggest imaging when it’s clinically necessary to support your diagnosis and treatment plan.
When Seeing Your GP May Be Better
In some cases, it’s more cost-effective and appropriate to go through your GP for imaging. For example:
MRI scans for the knee, head, or spine may be eligible for bulk billing when referred by a GP, provided certain Medicare criteria are met.
For knee MRIs, bulk billing can be applied for patients aged 16–49 if there is evidence of an acute ligament or meniscal tear (e.g., an inability to straighten the knee after an injury).
Additionally, if your symptoms are not clearly musculoskeletal or involve broader health concerns, we may recommend seeing your GP for further investigation.
Bulk Billing for Specific Groups
Your GP may also be able to bulk bill imaging services for patients who fall into specific categories, such as:
- Pensioner Concession Card Holders
- Health Care Card Holders
- DVA Gold/White Card Holders
- Full-time University Students
Should You See Your Osteo First?
If you’re dealing with back pain, joint issues, a recent injury, or movement-related discomfort, visiting your osteopath is a great first step. We’ll conduct a thorough assessment to determine whether a scan is appropriate for your condition and guide you through your options, including potential costs and Medicare eligibility. If we believe you’ll save money or have better access to services through your GP, we’ll refer you accordingly.
So, if you’re wondering whether imaging is the right next step for you, book an appointment with one of our osteopaths at Blackburn Allied Health Group. We’ll help you navigate the process and make the best decisions for your health.
